Activision pulled the trigger on its own official announcement for Guitar Hero 5, following on from Friday’s inadvertent reveal by one of the publisher’s European publicity partners. While much of the information contained in today’s announcement isn’t new, Activision’s official word did bring a few original tidbits of information.

Dragon Quest Wars waging on DSi in Japan
Dragon Quest Wars is in development at Intelligent Systems, better known as the Japanese shop behind Nintendo’s Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, and Paper Mario franchises. According to Square Enix’s Japanese-language announcement (which was translated by GameSpot), Dragon Quest Wars will play out as a board game of sorts, with players engaging in a series of battles with various monsters from the series’ universe.

Several theories have already cropped up regarding what this ambiguously blocky character could refer to. Immediately and most obviously, the “5″ could be in reference to a sequel to last year’s top-rated PS3-exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots–which creator Hideo Kojima teased at his Game Developers Conference keynote address in March. This theory is supported by the Web site’s page info, which lists among other keywords “MGS” and “Metal Gear.”

After launching Kojima Productions’ “Next” Web site as part of a teaser campaign on Wednesday, the publisher today updated said Web site with…a new teaser campaign.
