In everyquest gameplay, you have to jump through some hoops before you can access the city proper, however. Characters are designated a starting “village” on the outskirts of the city based on their race, from which they can only enter the capital after performing a special mission that grants them citizenship. While many will no doubt be sorry that there are no racial cities, the implementation here both preserves a sense of distinction between each race’s home, and makes the world’s civilized sections fairly painless to travel through.

As a result, the entire player base feels accessible at all times, which facilitates many of the things that one would need accomplish in a game of this type. This is a good thing, as you won’t be traveling too far from your faction’s city for the first hundred hours or so. There seem to be no shortage of quests that characters of all levels can undertake, and thankfully, most of these involve the two very things that you’d be doing anyway — running around, and killing stuff. I’ve lost count of the number of “kill X number of creature Y” quests I’ve completely, but luckily, they’ve been fairly rewarding so far. Most of my best equipment has actually been acquired by means of questing, and even as I get into the higher levels, this shows no sign of slowing down. Many players also seem to be hip to this fact, so it isn’t too hard to find comrades to complete particular quests with.

It gets to the point where you actually feel a bit naked if you’re in a hunting party without one of these quests active, especially since the information is readily available on the internet, or via word of mouth from fellow players. At the very least, if you bother to take the time to talk to the NPCs you encounter throughout the world, the journal that conveniently logs your active quests will be full in no time.

EverQuest II PC game Review I

Although its market dominance isn’t as assured as it used to be, the original EverQuest is probably the most influential MMORPG in existence. Every MMO that followed it owes it a debt, and even their developers will grudgingly admit this. That said, consider their debt repaid–EverQuest II has assimilated many of refinements made over the years to the formula that it helped established, and despite its association with the granddaddy of MMORPGs, it’s very much a modern game.

Those who haven’t touched an MMO other than the original EQ will find its successor a game that’s much more inviting, convenient, and forgiving. Likewise, those who left this one’s predecessor for greener pastures might find within this a reason to revisit Norrath. It’s still a young game, but given a solid launch, and an altogether slick presentation, getting into it is painless.

Norrath is a changed place. Displeased with the actions of their mortal creations (probably due to the incessant guild raids on their home planes), the gods unleashed a series of cataclysms upon the world. The landscape was razed, the moon itself was shattered, and most of the races were sundered from their ancestral homes. Only two bastions of civilizations remain: the cities of Qeynos and Freeport, home to Norrath’s benign and evil races, respectively. This setup will inform much of your experience with the game, and where you stand in relation to it is one of the first decisions you’ll have to make, not to mention among the most important. Both cities are identical in terms of the amenities they offer. What’s different is their visual tone, and the attitude of its inhabitants.

Within Qeynos’ walls, you’ll find a populace that’s generally hopeful of pulling through the recent tragedies, and welcoming of the bondless refugees (read: player characters) pouring into its bright streets. Conversely, the tone in Freeport is pretty much dog-eat-dog, and its people, at best, are wary and mistrusting of the flood of newcomers.

Whytkin is a new customizable summon that’s more of a bonus than anything else. You meet it early on in the game and can later customize its face to your liking with a full-featured editor. It won’t replace the more powerful summons that you’ll encounter later in the game, but you can train and customize it to your liking, and even play some mini-games and fight against other players’ Whytkins via ad-hoc multiplayer.

The Augment system is designed to allow players to customize characters with a variety of permanent abilities. These one-shot items mimic the side-job system capabilities of FFV, allowing you to give one character permanent access to skills beyond his or her typical suite. For example, midway through the game you can get an Augment ability that allows any one character to learn Edward’s Bardsong ability. With careful use, this creates some pretty powerful possibilities that can become quite necessary later on in the game as a result of the game’s difficulty.

On the whole, Final Fantasy IV on the DS is in every way a worthwhile update and wholly worthy of its price. The core game still holds up, and the updates are well worth the investment, even if you’ve played through the game a dozen times across a few platforms. The challenge level may catch you off guard, but it helps to keep the game tense and rewarding—something that harkens back admirably to the golden age of RPGs on the SNES.

Final Fantasy IV (DS) Review I

Final Fantasy takes full advantage of Square’s gorgeous DS 3D engine. Key cut-scenes have been fully animated and voiced, which is a pretty significant accomplishment on the DS, even if the voice acting isn’t superb. A pivotal moment early in the game, when [dude, Frank, spoiler much? -Ben], has an infinitely better narration thanks to this more advanced medium. The graphics definitely make scenes like this hit harder, which is saying a lot; Final Fantasy IV stands out as one of the most emotionally-charged RPGs ever.

Mechanically, the game makes little use of the touch-screen—you can use it to move around after you unlock a specific mapping feature or play the few mini-games—but it does benefit from some good use of the two screens. During battle, detailed information about party members is displayed there and it’s used to access menu items, keeping the top-screen clear for the action. During overworld and dungeon sequences, a handy map is displayed and gradually uncovered, giving you a better idea of where you are within a given area.

Though the heart of the game remains largely unchanged, the developers took much more license than they usually do. In addition to a slightly improved active-time battle system, notable changes include the addition of Whytkin, the advent of Mappingway, and, most significantly, the new Augment system.

Nokia N97 Review II

The Nokia N97 is not unusually large, small, or out of the ordinary in the way of dimensions. As a phone with a sliding keyboard, it is a little thicker than phones that do not have a physical keyboard - but it is directly comparable to the thickness of phones of the same type. It is just under 16 mm thick for the most part, to give you an idea of how this phone would feel in your pocket. In addition to this thickness, the camera area will jut out another 2 mm or so. In your hand, the phone feels very well balanced, and does not seem too large or small in any way. While it may not be the most comfortable phone to carry around in your pocket all day due to the thickness, that is about the only gripe one could come up with as far as size is concerned.

Speaking of super powers, let’s discuss price that soars sky-high. This is where the iPhone will immediately take the lead. The Nokia N97 is perhaps the most expensive mainstream smart phone available, with a tag of around $700 without a contract discount. Even with a contract price, the total only drops a little bit, leaving it hundreds of dollars behind the iPhone’s reasonable rate.

The next category is where the Nokia N97 jumps ahead: Physical features. The iPhone comes in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB models, and does not offer a slot for memory cards. The Nokia N97, on the other hand, does stay true to it’s name of a “mobile computer”. The internal memory is 32GB, and that comes standard on the phone - there is no sub-model that offers less storage. In addition to the internal space, expandable memory card slots can hold data cards of up to 16GB in size, to store music, photos, or videos. That’s a total storage limit of 48GB, which blows any other device clean out of the water.

Another technical advantage the Nokia N97 has over the iPhone is the ability to display Flash files and the Flash-based videos that power sites such as YouTube. This is one of the iPhone’s biggest weaknesses. While it can play YouTube videos using its integrated player, no other flash files can be used.

Internally, the Nokia N97 has build in Bluetooth connectivity, which the iPhone lacks. It also comes with a built in GPS system, which only newer versions of the iPhone are equipped with. They both have built in wi-fi for high-speed use at home or any hot-spot. Overall, the Nokia N97 is a more powerful than the iPhone - but the price tag is nearly three times as much when comparing post-service contract pricing.

It is hard to give a complete review without the phone being officially released yet. So far, it looks to be a promising alternative to many of the mainstream phones - just so long as you have a pocketbook thick enough to absorb all the dollar signs.
