EA’s dominating racing series takes a left turn with this uniquely action-oriented entry in the franchise, where players use their driving skills honed in previous NFS games to control their vehicle in dangerous, high speeds encounters. The game features international movie star, Maggie Q, as the lead character in the big-budget live-action sequences that propel the story forward as players get behind the wheel.
Undercover takes the franchise back to its roots and re-introduces break-neck cop chases, the world’s hottest cars and spectacular highway battles. It won’t be long before Need for Speed: Undercover is on store shelves, but for now we have to be content with the two new tidbits that EA unveiled at TGS. The series is known for its high speed police chases and both of the race types we hopped into were variations on a chase scene.
The first of these took place in a mode called Cost to State and has players destroy property and other vehicles to succeed. As we plowed into police cars a dollar value was added to a total destruction count. Big bucks were awarded for hitting certain spots on the map that resulted in special events such as a construction site collapsing. To make things easier players also have the ability to go into a mode that slows down the action as well as lowers the mass of every vehicle on screen except for the car you are driving. It makes for some excellently destructive crashes.
EA also showed us a Driver Job from a very late stage in the mobile game. The object is to reach a casino across the city while avoiding the law, which is using everything at their disposal to stop you. There are SUVs, souped up cruisers, and a chopper. The level of aggression was staggering, showing that the AI is very capable of taking even experienced drivers out of the game.
